The debate about climate change is over. The jury is in. It’s real, and we are causing it*.
Three numbers express the urgency of the situation:
2 degrees centigrade of temperature rise is the agreed maximum tolerable temperature rise
In order to achieve this, we have a budget of no more than 565 gigatons of carbon dioxide to be created by mid-century
2,795 gigatons of carbon dioxide would be generated by proven fossil fuel reserves
The implication is clear: 80% of known fossil fuels have to stay in the ground. Or it’s game over.
This has led to a growing Keep It In The Ground movement. You can read more about it here:
What can you do about this personally, today ? Leave your car at home. If you have to travel, and public transport doesn’t work for you, try rideshare.
*If you know someone who is still in denial about this, you can read a peer-reviewed survey of the world’s climate change research at: http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/2/024024/article. In summary: over 97% of academic papers expressing an opinion are in agreement with the consensus on anthropogenic global warming (man-made climate change). Only 0.7% were opposed, and many of these were of poor quality (see http://www.skepticalscience.com/heres-what-happens-try-to-replicate-contrarian-papers.html ).
